After VIENNA MY LOVE in Warsaw, VIENNE MON AMOUR in Paris wants to continue the event series with Austrian artists and bring more attention to the current Austrian music scene.

The Austrian indie music scene today is very much alive and kicking, but still largely unknown in France. On the other hand Austrian music professionals do not seem to have the necessary contacts to establish their bands in France. Given the high quality of current Austrian music, it deserves more attention in the media, professionals and the public.Vienne Mon Amour wants to give French music and media professionals the opportunity to establish and develop stronger relationships and networks with Austrian bands, labels and professionals.

The event has been developed in cooperation with French PR agency Boogie Drugstore (The
Asteroids Galaxy Tour/DK, WhoMadeWho/DK, Jay-Jay Johanson/SE,..), tour promoter Super! and
Waves Vienna Festival. The approach of Boogie Drugstore is that of a label : making strong artistic
choices and accompanying artists in the long run by elaborating a personal management, marketing
and/or promotion strategy. The company mobilizes its extensive network (media, labels, distributors,
publishers, tour promoters, etc.) at their service.
Super! represents more than 150 international artists from headliners like The XX, Animal Collective,
Bon Iver… to the young guns of international avant-garde music (Salem, Baths, Koudlam …) and
organizes over 800 concerts a year.

B.FLEISCHMANN (MORR MUSIC)
Bernhard Fleischmann was born in Vienna in 1975. His first album, “Poploops for Breakfast” was released on Morr Music back in 1999 and soon became an Electronica classic. Since then he released a bunch of Albums and EP´s, not without changing his style over the years. He’s also part of different projects like “The Year Of”, a Vienna pop supergroup or “Duo 505″, a collaboration with Herbert Weixelbaum. Recently B.Fleischmann has frequently worked as a composer for various theatre productions and film scores. The morr Music sublabel “Sound Of A Handshake” released two 2cd-sets that feature Fleischmann’s stunning live performances.

GINGA (MONKEY.)
According to Austrian music critics, Ginga, consisting of the singer and guitarist Alex Konrad, violinist and bass player Emanuel Donner, drummer Matthias Loitsch and guitarist Klemens Wihlidal, certainly have what is needed to establish themselves internationally. Music-wise,they move in the fields of pop, folk and rock, and succeed in creating a unique style that clearly stands out. The four musicians approach matters with rather reduced sounds. With this reticency, the songs unfold an extraordinary appeal. The individual pieces are all wonderfully arranged and sprinkled with memorable and beautiful melancholic melodies that will not leave you untouched. One should be careful with superlatives, yes, but from a musical point of view, the four gentlemen have everything they could possibly need for a perfect rock band.

In her own charming way, Clara Luzia mainly spreads a folk-feeling, but some electronic influences in many of her arrangements cannot be denied. After the second album “The Long Memory” in 2007, she released her next album “The Ground Below” two years later. Her most recent work “Falling Into Place” was released in 2011. Once again, she has proved that she is rightfully considered as one of the most talented songwriters of the country. Her songs range from catchy pop songs to drifts into lilting melancholy, letting happiness and melancholy alternate in skilful harmony. In terms of content, her songs are mainly about relationships, unrequited love, loss, separation and deep emotions, always wrapped up in beautiful metaphors, which could just as well be bundled in a book of poems.

The wolves are back in these woods, amidst their pack a girl and her tales of loneliness, hunger and the moon. This girl is Monsterheart. She digs graves, blood and making you dance. Produced by Vangelis Labrakis in the ruins of Berlin the 6 songs on this EP take simple rhythms and catchy pop melodies and blend them with heartfelt lyrics about the ragged glamour of life, the beautiful crudeness of love …and cannibalism. The Monsterheart EP was written in Vienna, Tel Aviv and Berlin. It is about the diversity of life in death and the feeling of finding beauty in unlikely places.

It’s not too often that the German language is represented on the stages of a festival that focuses mainly on Scandinavian music. However, this year the festival has specifically chosen one band from a variety of proposed formations that will be able to break these boundaries with linguistic and musical originality.

In Austria Garish has already been able to make quite a name for itself. With exceptional linguistic and musical pieces, the band has constructed its own universe, exhausted the definition of pop to its limits and has sustainably established itself amongst the most remarkable acts of the local music scene.

Since its beginnings in the late nineties, the band has created a dense as broad oeuvre and has crowned it all with the highly acclaimed recent album “Wenn dir das meine Liebe nicht beweist” (2010). The directness and down-to-earthness, the portfolio of applied instruments (from the accordion to the mandolin) – all this has enthralled audiences and critics alike. In recent years there has been a significant increase in friendly musical connections to Germany: last year the reknowned band Element of Crime invited Garish to perform with them on stage at the Burgtheater. Drummer Markus Perner also shares his instrumental skills in Thees Uhlmann’s band. Garish has just recently started to work on the sixth studio album, which will be released early 2013.

See and hear for yourself and experience Garish first hand at the Spot Festival in Aarhus, Denmark, on the 5th of May 2012.

With just weeks to go, Springfestival will soon be kick-starting the festival season off across the whole of Europe. The leading electronic urban event, which takes over the wondrous UNESCO World Heritage and UNESCO City of Design, Graz, takes place in many stunning venues including the Dom im Berg cavern venue to the vaulted grandeur of the Stadthalle. Featuring clubs, live spaces and the warehouse environments, sound-tracked by some of the world’s leading live acts and DJs, Springfestival is a mix of inspiring electronic music, art, design and technology, with enriching debate at the Springsessions conference. Graz features Michelin starred-restaurants, chic shops and an abundance of culture in its myriad squares, plazas, winding passages and urban spaces.

Springfestival has just announced more names and revealed its full programme which can be seen here: http://www.springfestival.at/springfestival-2012/programme

Opening the festival is Brazilian Amon Tobin’s ISAM, a stunning show which is already touring the world. This visual and aural segueing features Amon within the central cube using real-time projection mapping and audio-reactive elements to create a unique feast for the senses which has already won him huge acclaim.

On a techno tip, there’s some fierce sounds in store from Luke Slater aka Planetary Assault System, Rolando, Ben Sims and DJ Surgeon who converge under the vaulted roof of the Dom im Berg cave for Machine Night; expect seismic beats and pounding bass from start to finish.

Berghain regular and Hot Flush exponent Scuba also stars; the UK-born DJ and producer is one of the hottest talents around right now, and his recent mind-bending 32-track DJ Kicks mix showcased why everyone he is in such demand. And Black Strobe’s Arnaud Rebotini also stars. The French musician has an esteemed career, with his recent Someone Gave Me Religion album showing his critically attuned ear is still razor sharp.

The City of Graz, Austria
Graz is a stunning city in south-east Austria, awarded with the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999 which was renewed in 2010, along with European Capital of Culture status in 2003. It features architectural wonders originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroads for centuries. The city of Graz received the coveted City of Design status, also from UNESCO, last year, linked into everything from the user interface of the city and the self-conception of the Grazers right through to the economy – such as tourism, trade and gastronomy. Graz is very much a forward-thinking town, and this inspiring recognition will keep it evolving. Springfestival, or course, is incredibly proud to be a part of this process.

This weekend musicians and music lovers from all around the world will gather in the Germany city of Witten for a three-day international festival full of contemporary music – music that has literally never been heard before.

Since 1969, the festival Witten Days for New Chamber Music constantly sets the mark for new tendencies in contemporary music and serves as a meeting point for avant-garde music, as well as for fair organizers and publishers, for connoisseurs and music lovers. For the past four decades many important musical works have been heard in Witten for the very first time – works that have become an essential part of modern music history. Althogether Witten has premiered over 600 works that have ever since been repeatedly performed around the world. This year’s program offers no less than 23 world premieres and six German premieres by composers from eleven countries.

The composer-portrait is dedicated to the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen, who was born in 1952 in Copenhagen. In addition to his new 4th String Quartet – several compositions will be performed in Germany for the first time. One of the highlights of the festival will be the string quartet summit, which will unite the London Arditti Quartet with the New York JACK Quartet to a double quartet. Besides new quartet compositions by Hans Abrahamsen, Naomi Pinnock, Simon Steen-Andersen and Walter Zimmermann, the program holds two new double quartets by James Clarke and Mauro Lanza.

More than ever, the festival will be strongly influenced by promising new composer talents. Among the newcomers Anne Cleare (1983, IE) Mark Barden (1980, USA), Simon Steen-Andersen (1976, DK), Stefan Wirth (1975, CH), Marco Nikodijevic (1980,RS), Ørjan Matre (1979, NO), Brigitta Muntendorf (1980, D), Mauro Lanza (1975, I), Naomi Pinnock (1979, GB) and James Clarke (1957, GB), Austria will also be represented by our brilliant composer Klaus Lang (1971). As a master of quiet, ever-changing sound worlds, Klang Lang is known for sweeping the audience off its feets and taking it on acoustic journeys that lead to the outer limits of sonic perception. This year, visitors of the festival will be able to experience the world premiere of his new composition “vier linien. zweifaches weiß” for winds, piano and percussion.

As always, all performances will be broadcasted live by the West German Broadcasting Company WDR, starting with a live broadcast on the 27th of April 2012 from 8.00 – 10.30 p.m.

Since mica – music austria has been fostering the young comtemporary music scene for quite some time now, the Austrian music information center will also be present at the festival to share more information on further aspiring and exciting young composers from Austria.

Mnozil Brass is a brass band that never ceases to amaze, impress and delight when it comes to filling huge venues with their hilarious mix of music and entertainment. No matter in what context or where the seven musicians appear, the combo always manages to trigger the enthusiasm and blood pressure of fans and critics across the globe.

Although all highly virtuosically trained and skilled, the seven musicians thrive in breaking conventional musical boundaries and yet always succeed in setting the right tone. Musicwise the repertoire of the septet ranges from typical brass music, German Schlager hits, jazz and pop music to opera and operetta, all spiced up with a whole load of comedy slapstick.

A glance at the self-definition on the band’s website almost sounds like a mission statement:

We play applied brass music for people from all walks of life.
We face every challenge, no tone is too high for us, no lip too hot, no music is too inferior.
You can see our music and smell the stage performance.

Mnozil brass has been around for quite a while. Founded in 1992 at a legendary session in the local pub of Joseph Mnozil, a tavern in Vienna’s first district, they started out by playing at weddings, birthdays, funerals and markets and slowly but consistently worked their way up to the big concert and theater stages. Although accomplished musicians, due to the ever booming demand, the seven members of the band, namely Thomas Gansch (trumpet), Robert Rother (trumpet), Roman Rindberger (trumpet), Leonhard Paul (trombone, bass trumpet), Gerhard Füßl (trombone), Zoltan Kiss (trombone), Wilfried Brandstötter (tuba), decided in 2000 to devote themselves mainly to Mnozil Brass.

Ever since, they have been playing over 120 international gigs a year. Extensive tours have taken them across almost all continents of the world. With their vast range of musical output the combo has been able to fill huge venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Burgtheater in Vienna, opera houses of Munich, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Leipzig and excite fascinated audiences at prestigious festivals like the Salzburg Festival and the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival.

Indeed, their tour schedule makes you wonder where they find any time to spare for themselves, which just shows their dedication and passion all the more. Behold if you ever get a chance to experience this exceptional band live – it will most likely be an experience you will never forget.

Traditional folk music in a completely new context – this is the concept of the trio Netnakisum. Reading the name of the Styrian formation from back to front spells nothing other than the word ‘musicians’ in German. And brilliant musicians they are, the three ladies Magdalena Denz, Marie-Theres Härtel and deeLinde. The aim of this extraordinary string trio is to free folk music of conventional and traditional stereotypes and give it a completely new and contemporary feel.

Netnakisum can already look back on a six-year history. Founded in 2004 by Hermann Härtel jun. (1st violin), Magdalena Zenz (2nd violin), Marie-Theres Härtel (viola) and Linde Härtel (cello), the ensemble started out as a quartet and set itself the goal to release folk music from its tight traditional corset and match it with different music and styles from around the world.

Their very open understanding of music shows no fear of contact and demonstrates the courage to take risks. The four musicians make use of the extremely rich collection of Asian sounds, as well as the repertoire of traditional songs in South America and Europe. They yodel as if there is no tomorrow, divert violins from its intended use and convert them to guitars or zithers, always depending on the requirements of their music. Stylistically, the quartet has no limits. With an impressive matter of course, Netnakisum makes excursions into other musical genres such as jazz, rock, funk or Irish folk.

Hermann Härtel, Magdalena Zenz, Marie-Theres Härtel and Linde Härtel created a completely new and very international sounding version of world music, which does not have much to do with the original folk music. After a short period of time, Netnakisum was able to succeed in finding its very own distinctive style. No matter where the string quartet appears, the audience has always been impressed and excited by the very inspiring and lively performances.

Netnakisum – Spider Dreams by mica

In 2006 the initial line-up changed for the first time. Hermann Härtel jun. left the group and was replaced in his position of first violin by Magdalena Zenz. Soon after, Johanna Kugler joined the ensemble on the second violin. A year later, a dream came true with their first album. Even the critics of the country were impressed with the quality of the output and enthusiastically praised their first work. Again, numerous performances followed at home and abroad, including concerts in Portugal, Switzerland, Germany and Ireland.

In the fall of 2009, the string quartet released its second album “Nutville”. Once again, the critics were excited. The four Styrian women succeeded in balancing ambition and fun in a playful way. The pieces sound more diverse than ever and reveal very high song writing qualities.

A few months later, in the beginning of 2010, the group began a complete new era. Johanna Kugler left the ensemble and the quartet became a trio. It is emphasized that it was a friendly separation.

The first album of the trio was released in April 2011 with the title “Das Geheimnis der Alpenstube”. With their fresh interpretation of traditional folk music, Netnakisum continue to rock the stage in various countries.

26 April – 13 May 2012, Vienna

After a year of creative recess we return with another superb festival. Launched in 2004, Balkan Fever evolved into the biggest European event of its kind. No other locale could conceivably be better suited than Vienna, it always having been the most northern metropolis of Southeast Europe, that site from which the fate of the Balkans was affected in manifold ways.

We are often reminded that the «Balkan Boom» is over, the train long out of the station. We rejoin: thank god it is over! Because now that we had enough of trumpet madness and Balkan disco, maybe we will listen even more closely to what else this immeasurably rich cultural space between Vienna and Istanbul has to offer and for which, by the way, Balkan Fever has been a welcoming platform from its inception. Thus: the waning of the Balkan boom (if there ever was such a beast) is the best thing that could happen to us, because it will open up new audiences for us.

Not that we wouldn’t know how to appreciate good Gypsy brass and hot Balkan and Oriental dancefloor which always played an important role at Balkan Fever – but indeed not the main one. Let’s recall once more: what was it Balkan Fever stood for programmatically? First and foremost for transcending and not enshrining national boundaries, for demanding world music, interesting traditional music (no folklore), for Jazz (ethnically inspired or not), underground rock and independent music, and increasingly electronic music as well. Ecstasy and high standard forever reconciled!

Balkan Fever 2012 again will cover as broad a spectrum as possible with its planned 13 concerts spread over five venues: Porgy & Bess, Sargfabrik, RadioKulturhaus, Ost Klub and Replugged. Musicians from 14 nations working with musical forms blended in every imaginable way will reveal the Balkan area as a creative, multifaceted and modern region and guarantee a thoroughly diverse audience profile: jazz, rock, punk, funk, dub, ska, reggae, afro, latin, chanson, pop, ambient, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, protest songs and of course fascinating ethnic music in its pure state or in every conceivable combination of said styles: gypsy-brass, Hungarian, Serbian, Bosnian, Romanian, Macedonian, Bulgarian, Albanian, Greek, Armenian, Persian, Jewish-Sephardic and Yiddish-Eastern European folk. Make your choice! Go for the known and appreciated but also for the unknown, still to be acquired taste.

All three are part of a bustling group of young Austrian musicians, who have succeeded in establishing many thriving bands such as S.K. Invitational (Texta, Blumentopf, FIVA, TY)or Lylit and this shows in various excellent recordings.

A long time ago the three musicians got together to dedicate themselves to enhancing the sound of a classic trio with a completely new definition and interpretation. Namby-Pamby Boy’s inspiration lies in rock and hip hop. Since the three musicians conceive genre boundaries as restrictions of their own creativity, their compositions are always committed to thinking outside of the box.

Namby-Pamby Boy are able to unite jazz, rock and hip hop to a fantastic coherent whole, which is far from static uniformity, but rather evolves to new forms in a constant process of change. Namby-Pamby Boy are currently on tour, be sure to check out one of their shows.

Soundings is a unique platform for contemporary music presenting and profiling young composers and musicians from the UK and Austria in workshops, discussions and concerts. Now into its 9th year, Soundings is a key event in the UK’s music calendar, offering a rare opportunity to meet some of today’s leading composers, watch them at work and hear the latest compositions, performed by some of the finest young musicians of today.

This year’s Soundings brings together six new faces: Austrian composers Johannes Berauer, Manuela Kerer and Thomas Wally and UK representatives Charlotte Bray, Gavin Higgins and Luke Styles. Their works will be rehearsed in workshops open to the public and performed in two evening concerts by musicians including the renowned Fidelio Trio (Darragh Morgan, violin; Robin Michael, cello; Mary Dullea, piano and curator), soprano Rhona McKail, Austrian clarinettist, Sabine Zwick and Austrian flautist Thomas Frey.

A new initiative, ‘Soundings Academy’, will give young performers an opportunity to participate in the platform. A panel discussion explores ways of studying, teaching as well as promoting new music with, among others, Judith Serota, former Executive Director of Spitalfields Festival.
