BIOGRAPHY

Donauwellenreiter, consisting of the four Vienna-based musicians Maria Craffonara (vocals, violin), Thomas Castañeda (piano), Jörg Mikula (drums) and Lukas Lauermann (cello),  is a quartet that has been praised and recognized for both its outstanding live concerts and recordings and has long since made a name for itself beyond Austrian borders.

After its past two albums “Annäherung” (2012) and “Messëi” (2014, released by the renowned German label Intuition), Donauwellenreiter has set out to reach new artistic heights and is ready to present its impressive and astonishing new work with its third album “Euphoria” (to be released in Autumn 2016). The conglomeration of the musical influences and experiences of the individual ensemble members – all of which also compose and contribute with various style origins such as folklore, pop, jazz, classical, chamber music, world music and more – merges into a gripping, sensual and intellectually stimulating whole. As meticulous as it may be to articulate all the varied nuances of the unique sound and style of Donauwellenreiter, the beauty and the clarity of this music can sometimes leave you speechless. Above all, this collective masterfully understands how to perform music that speaks and flows freely and is yet focused.

Donauwellenreiter succeeds in creating equally approachable and demanding modern art music, which also fascinates and inspires listeners who avoid compulsive genre conventions and align their musical perception around quality and artistic substance.

Thus, Donauwellenreiter finds its attentive audience in Belgrade, Canada, Lucerne or Portugal, as well as at home in Vienna, whereby a mature urban openness of the city is undoubtedly a basic element and a precondition for the art of this ensemble.
