BIOGRAPHY
Florian Klinger, born 1991, studied classical percussion and jazz mallets in Vienna and New York City. Besides his position as percussionist at the Volksopera Vienna, he is pursuing a career as a soloist and composer.
His recently founded band includes close companions from his previous career: Lorenz Raab (tp), Fabian Rucker (sax), Georg Vogel (pn), Raphael Preuschl (bs), and Andreas Lettner (dr). On his album, he welcomes guest artists such as singer Patrizia Ferrara, MC Al-Khabir Richman, clarinettist Helmut Hödl, and violinist Huiseung Yoo.
On his first album as leader, Florian Klinger aims to have his compositions echo his broad, multi-genre musical spectrum. He is one of the few musicians in Austria who are professionally active in classical music as well as jazz and improvisation. It was especially his lessons with Stefon Harris and Kevin Norton in the US that helped Klinger perfect his compositions – compositions which transport listeners into new and different soundscapes. In his current album “One”, the musical variety ranges from beat-laden songs that evoke J Dilla, Common and neo soul to hymns with orchestral airs. Vibrant ballads reminiscent of jazz music of the 1940s are followed by orientally inspired grooves and swinging odd metres. Jiggy brass sections alternate with melancholic piano passages and bowed bass. The virtuous, soulful vibraphone is ever-present, but always serves the composition. The listeners are given the chance to experience this almost rare instrument in an extremely refreshing way.
