Florian Klinger, born in 1991, is a percussionist, composer, and soloist who studied classical percussion and jazz mallets in Vienna and New York City. In addition to his role as a percussionist at the Volksoper Vienna, he is building a career as a solo artist and composer.
Klinger’s recently formed band features talented musicians from his previous projects, including Lorenz Raab (trumpet), Fabian Rucker (saxophone), Georg Vogel (piano), Raphael Preuschl (bass), and Andreas Lettner (drums). On his debut album, he collaborates with guest artists such as singer Patrizia Ferrara, MC Al-Khabir Richman, clarinetist Helmut Hödl, and violinist Huiseung Yoo.
As a leader, Klinger’s album showcases his broad musical spectrum, blending elements of classical, jazz, and improvisation. He is one of the few Austrian musicians who seamlessly navigate both classical and contemporary genres. His studies with Stefon Harris and Kevin Norton in the U.S. greatly influenced his compositional style, resulting in music that transports listeners into rich and diverse soundscapes.
On his album One, Klinger explores a wide range of styles, from beat-driven tracks reminiscent of J Dilla, Common, and neo-soul, to hymnal pieces with orchestral undertones. The album also features vibrant jazz ballads, oriental-inspired grooves, and swinging odd meters. Brass sections create a lively contrast with melancholic piano passages, while the soulful vibes of the vibraphone remain at the heart of each composition. Klinger’s use of the vibraphone offers a refreshing take on the instrument, giving listeners a chance to experience its versatility in new and exciting ways.
