Andy Middleton is an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader based in Vienna, recognized for a powerful and nuanced approach to modern jazz that combines post-bop intensity with lyrical depth and contemporary harmonic language.

After nearly two decades on the New York jazz scene, Middleton relocated to Vienna in 2006, where he has since become an active presence as a performer, composer, and educator. He teaches jazz composition, arrangement, and saxophone at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Middleton has collaborated with leading figures of international jazz, including Ralph Towner, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Maria Schneider, Billy Hart, Richie Beirach, Bob Mintzer, Lionel Hampton, and David Liebman, as well as numerous prominent European musicians. His work ranges from fiercely energetic improvisation to introspective, melodic expression, rooted in the jazz tradition while maintaining a contemporary voice.

His artistry has been widely praised by international media. The New York Times described him as “an accomplished composer as well as a smart post-bop tenor saxophonist”, while Jazzthing called him “one of the best tenor saxophonists and soprano players on the scene”.
