BIOGRAPHY
Jan Satler (*1997) is a Slovenian pianist whose artistic profile is shaped by a strong desire to communicate through performance, stylistic versatility, and close collaboration with composers of our time. In 2024/25, he was appointed the first Young Artist in Residence of the Institute for Piano Performance at mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In this capacity, he led several courses and workshops at the university. He completed his Master´s degree in Piano Performance and New Music at mdw with unanimous distinction, followed by a postgraduate programme at the same institution. His artistic development was shaped by Christopher Hinterhuber and Mathilde Hoursiangou, and previously by Till Alexander Körber at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz. As a recipient of the prestigious SYLFF programme (The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund) of the Tokyo Foundation and the ´Leistungsstipendium´ of the university, he was recognised for outstanding artistic and academic achievements. He was selected to be part of NASOM for the years 2027/28.
A central focus of his artistic work is contemporary music. With more than 100 world premieres, by composers such as Georg Friedrich Haas, Karlheinz Essl, Thomas Wally, Tamara Friebel, Bernhard Lang, Hannes Dufek, and Steffi Weismann, to his credit, he has established himself as a dedicated interpreter of new works and has collaborated with leading Austrian ensembles including Klangforum Wien, PHACE, Platypus Ensemble, and Ensemble Wiener Collage. His work is documented through numerous radio and CD productions, including recordings for ORF, Deutschlandradio, RTV Slovenija, and the labels Quinton Records, Gramola, as well as col legno. Invitations to festivals such as the Salzburger Festspiele, Wien Modern, the World New Music Days, the Wiener Festwochen, Music Biennale Zagreb, Grafenegg, Klangspuren Schwaz, Festival Ljubljana, the Imago Dei Festival, Poznan Musical Spring, and the 4020 Festival reflect his sustained presence in the international contemporary music scene. Since July 2023, Jan Satler has been a member and Head of Organisation of the Platypus Ensemble.
