BIOGRAPHY

The quartet Polwechsel, founded by Werner Dafeldecker and Michael Moser – and after some changes in the line-up now since 2004 include Burkhard Beins and Martin Brandlmayr – is said to be one of the most stringent and radical ensembles at the intersection of new music and structural improvisation. Detached and cool use of electronics and exactly measured, slow-motion-like transformations of sound surfaces and sound complexes – often just barely above the point of being heard and including unorthodox methods of playing acoustical instruments – are the dominating elements in the work of the four sound-researchers.

“Exactitude and loss – the music of Werner Dafeldecker oscillates between these seemingly independent poles. Exactitude is demanded in each fiber, from the process of composing down to the smallest detail of the performance … The compositions consist in finding and comparing of sonic extremes.” (Christian Scheib)
Werner Dafeldecker explains: ” The compositional decision consists in choosing a sound on the basis of trust. If the sound endures, it has enough power to be used over a longer period and in different contexts. The sound is the source of inspiration, followed by sound sufraces. To what degree can a given sound be strained, what can you do with it, in what contexts can you put it, and in what ways.”
