Austrian music theatre creators are invited to apply for the presentation of a music theatre project as part of the Austrian Music Theatre Day (AMD), taking place on 17–18 September 2026 in Vienna. Eligible works must contain music as an inherent component and must be created by an Austrian author or a creator residing in Austria. Application deadline: 9 June 2026.

The Voice in Focus

This year’s Austrian Music Theatre Day places a central musical topic in the spotlight: the use of the voice in music theatre.

The topic raises questions from a variety of perspectives: How are vocal students prepared—if at all—for the interpretation of contemporary music theatre works? How is the voice used in current compositions, whether in its purely physical form or enhanced through electronic means? How familiar are composers with the capabilities of the human voice and its various registers? What impact does collaboration between composers and singers have on the creation and development of new works?

For project presentations of approximately 7 minutes during the AMD, works are sought that specifically engage with the theme of the human voice within the context of music theatre. Approaches and artistic expressions may vary widely.

What is the AUSTRIAN MUSIC THEATRE DAY?

The Austrian Music Theatre Day conference was established in 2015 as part of the Musiktheatertage Wien festival and has been organized since 2018 in cooperation with mica – music austria / Austrian Music Export.

The event provides networking opportunities and professional exchange for Austrian music theatre creators with national and international presenters, curators, and programmers. Austrian producers and artists can present their work through pitch sessions and connect directly with international presenters. The event also fosters networking and exchange within the Austrian music theatre community.

The Musiktheatertage Wien festival is dedicated to contemporary music theatre and explores innovative performance formats and approaches to the art form.

Which Works Can Be Submitted?

Eligible works must contain music as an inherent component and must be created by an Austrian author or a creator residing in Austria.

Applications may be submitted by music theatre groups and producers as well as by individual artists, including composers, musicians, directors, and others.

Both fully composed works and projects based on improvisation or performance practices are eligible. There are no stylistic restrictions.
