Portrait: Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Vienna

The “Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Vienna” finds its musical inspiration from the musical tradition and historical context Vienna has embodied over the last 300 years, as implied in their name.  The founders Gustavo Balanesco (p) and Silvia Gelos (fl) lead the ensemble and are also the paramount creative sources for the project.  During his childhood music was often a topic of discussion, the pianist Gustavo Balanesco, a mixture of Austrian-Argentinean blood, became fascinated by the music of early 20th century Viennese composers, such as Gustav Mahler and Bruno Walter. Equally essential to his musical formation is the music of the modern- classical, which plays an essential role in both his solo and ensemble works.

Important was the fact that Silvia Gelos and Gustavo Balanesco found their way into the ensemble, and with that also the diplomatic role they hold between Argentina and Austrian, mixing traditional forms of the respective countries: especially important is the early modern classical style of Richard Strauss and the musical dynasty that followed him.  The “Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Vienna” has had continuing success throughout their time on tour, and they include “Vienna” within their ensemble title, as a homage to the esteemed history of this great city, and the qualitative impressions it engenders within the listener.

Additionally, the “Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Vienna” gives support to and provides a platform through the hosting of songwriting competitions, for unknown and up and coming composers.  The competition allows entries from any and all musicians and styles, without restriction based on age or genus and provides the platform for inter-disciplinary musical exchange. The formation of the “Labyrinth Platform” has also been instrumental in bringing together composers from around the world, and in organizing both national and international tours for the performance of their works.  It is through both the Ensemble’s creative work and their embodiment of inter-cultural collaboration, wish gives credence and integrity to the beneficent philanthropic efforts they sponsor.
