BIOGRAPHY
Alexander Chernyshkov is a composer, performer, and improviser. Born in Russia and raised in Verona, Italy, he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Chaya Czernowin and Karlheinz Essl, and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz with Clemens Gadenstätter.
Chernyshkov has attended numerous academies and workshops, including the Darmstadt Ferienkurse for Contemporary Music (2008-2010), Tzlil Meudcan (Tel Aviv), and the Tchaikovsky Summer Academy. He has studied with, been influenced by, and collaborated with composers such as Pierluigi Billone, Georges Aperghis, Sergej Newski, Dmitrij Kourljandskij, and Steven Kazuo-Takasugi.
His music is regularly performed across Europe and Russia and has been broadcast on stations like Ö1, BBC, and TOPOT. His works have been commissioned and featured in prominent festivals, including Wien Modern 2008 (Vienna), Donaueschinger Musiktage 2010 (Off-Programm), Gaudeamus 2015 (Utrecht), Biennale di Venezia Musica 2016-2017, Bludenzer Musiktage (Bludenz), Platforma (Moscow), NEW_Air (Vienna), Tzlil Meudcan (Tel Aviv), Izlog Festival (Zagreb), Lost in Translation (Moscow), Unsafe and Sounds (Vienna), Pythian Games (St. Petersburg), Transit Festival (Leuven), Maggio Fiorentino (Florence), and Musiktheatertage Wien 2018.
Chernyshkov is also actively engaged in experimenting with the creation of new instruments, all of which are strictly acoustical and mechanical. He works with long tubes to transform wind instruments and uses motors, relays, and electromagnets as sources of vibration.
