BIOGRAPHY
With a strong awareness of the need to give new impetus to the contemporary creation of vocal music, and driven by the desire to revive the rich repertoire of music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Early Baroque, a group of dedicated singers under the direction of Cordula Bürgi founded the ensemble CANTANDO ADMONT. With passion and deep commitment, the ensemble is devoted to revitalizing the wealth of historical vocal heritage within contemporary musical practice. The ensemble firmly believes that only through a profound engagement with the repertoire of the past can contemporary creation flourish anew and be liberated from the constraints of specialization. Especially today, this offers hope for a fresh artistic departure. Through its own concert series — “concert talk”, “solo cantando”, and “Junge Stimmen”— CANTANDO ADMONT is committed to establishing a new concert tradition in Graz and Vienna.
CANTANDO ADMONT performs at renowned festivals and venues such as the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals, Acht Brücken Festival Cologne, Wien Modern, steirischer herbst, Munich Biennale, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wiener Festwochen, Konzerthaus Wien, Musikverein Wien, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and Onassis Center Athens. In 2025, the ensemble appeared in Beat Furrer’s opera DAS GROSSE FEUER at the Zurich Opera House.
A defining characteristic of the ensemble is its ongoing collaboration with contemporary composers. Special focus is given to the vocal works of Beat Furrer, whose close artistic relationship with CANTANDO ADMONT has led to the creation of numerous new works — including the opera DAS GROSSE FEUER. In addition, CANTANDO ADMONT performs with ensembles and orchestras such as Klangforum Wien, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Philharmonia Zürich, Ensemble PHACE, Nimikry, Schallfeld Ensemble, Ensemble Nikel, KNM Berlin, Ensemble Proton Bern, Ictus Ensemble, and Ensemble dissonArt.
