BIOGRAPHY

Growing up in the working-class district of Ottakring in Vienna, the siblings Esra and Enes Özmen have found in hip hop the perfect medium to make themselves heard and to give recognition to their own world with all its conflicts. Together they form the duo EsRAP and deal in their mixed German/Turkish lyrics with questions of identity, being foreign in their own country as children of the third generation, the necessity of rebellion, rap as resistance and also being a woman in the male-dominated hip hop world. In contrast to the usual division of roles in this, Esra contributes the hard and fast rhymes, while her brother Enes, with his sensitive voice, takes over the more melodic vocal parts. Musically, EsRAP finds inspiration in the Turkish oriental genre of arabesque, which they like to combine with modern beats.

After releasing many tracks on digital channels, their debut album “Tschuschistan” was released in June 2019 on Berlin-based label Springstoff. This was followed in September by the EP “Freunde dabei”, co-produced with the quirky Balkan polka metal band GASMAC GILMORE.

EsRAP have become a role model of Austrian resistant pop art with a migrant background through their releases and concerts in recent years and accordingly enjoy media attention. In summer 2022 their second album “Mamafih” was released again on Springstoff with great reception.
