The Özlem Bulut Band stands for an energetic mix of arabesque elements, jazz and pop. Özlem Bulut grew up listening to traditional music in Eastern Anatolia. When she continued her classical vocal studies in Vienna, she met a congenial partner in composer and pianist Marco Annau, who brought her visions of a contemporary interpretation of Anatolian music to life.

With “Ayna” (in German “Spiegel”), the Özlem Bulut Band now releases their long-awaited third album. Like a mirror, the original compositions tell of a sharpened view of the outside world as well as of introspection. Girls’ Song” deals with resilient femininity, “Yeşilçam” is about the old and much-loved Turkish cinema, “İskelede bir çırak” discusses the malaise of an unleashed construction industry and “Numbers” is about playing with numbers. And since one’s roots do not end where one has begun to grow, lyrics in Kurdish and German can be heard. The Viennese melange of the Özlem Bulut Band once again gets its unmistakable froth in current world music on the new album thanks to the outstanding line-up.
