Graz-born, Vienna-based drummer Jan Samson Krizanic has made a name for himself in recent years not only as a sought-after sideman (including in saxophonist Florian Supancic’s bands), but also as a (co-)bandleader: For example, with his sextet High Touring (CD “High Touring Collective,” 2022), in which Krizanic also reveals original approaches as a (hard) rock-influenced composer. Or in the excessive free-metal-hardcore trio Saugbagger—here, Krizanic primarily plays electric bass.
The concept of the trio Polycrisis, featuring Vienna-based guitarist Kenji Herbert and saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein—who will be teaching at the Jazz Institute of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz until 2025—takes a different approach: Here, they indulge in a free, intuitive trialogue to interweave the individual voices into a unified whole through dense interplay—unpredictable, rich in contrast, and yet marked by narrative coherence. The first Polycrisis album, “Probably Possible,” released on Kalnein’s label Natango Music, will be presented today as part of the “5 Million Pesos” series!
