Each month, we spotlight up-and-coming jazz artists from Austria as part of the “5 Million Pesos” series — a monthly concert and radio broadcast dedicated to young jazz in and from Austria, presented by Radiokulturhaus Vienna and the Ö1 Jazz Department. For May, the spotlight shines on Philipp Ossanna’s Gummimamba.

Broadcast: TBA

Philipp Ossanna’s Gummimamba

Guitarist Philipp Ossanna is known, among other things, as a member of the internationally successful Tyrolean minimal rock-jazz quartet HI5; in the new trio Gummimamba, featuring trumpeter Martin Ohrwalder and drummer Lukas Laimer, he takes the helm as the sole bandleader.

Powerful, electronically enhanced sonic eruptions that blend cleverly composed structures, free improvisation, and cool grooves are what make the trio stand out on their 2025 debut album “Strange Weather”—which, incidentally, was awarded the City of Innsbruck Jazz Prize for Release of the Year by TonArtTirol.

Ossanna, who also designs sound installations, demonstrates his skills as a thoughtful choreographer of dynamic sound metamorphoses.

In collaboration with the Ö1 Jazz editorial team.
