BIOGRAPHY

/kry is an instrumental trio formed in Vienna in late 2019, bringing together clarinet, bass, drums, and electronics into a highly focused, exploratory sound. Moving freely between contemporary grooves, avant-garde jazz, and electronic abstraction, the trio resists fixed genre definitions in favor of precision, intuition, and collective control.

Their music balances reduction and complexity – minimal gestures alongside dense rhythmic and textural interplay – shaped by the distinct backgrounds of its three members. /kry’s debut album was recorded in 2021 at ORF Radio Funkhaus and released on Freifeld, the independent label founded by drummer Alexander Yannilos. In 2022, the trio was selected for NASOM – New Austrian Sound of Music 2023/24.

With roots in improvised music, contemporary composition, and experimental electronics, /kry operates at the intersection of structure and openness, creating a sound that is both deliberate and volatile – equally suited for concert stages, clubs, and hybrid performance contexts.

Line-up:
Mona Matbou Riahi – clarinet, electronics
Philipp Kienberger – bass, electronics
Alexander Yannilos – drums
