BIOGRAPHY
In Austrian German, there’s the beautiful word goschat, which can only inadequately be translated as “cheeky” or “sassy.” The best explanation comes from the young musician Sodl: you just have to attend one of her concerts and let yourself be swept away by her explosive primal force. Sodl is a rough diamond, one that hopefully no one will ever try to polish. Not that there’s any risk — she wouldn’t let that happen. Contrasts are a hallmark of Sodl’s music, where viscosity and intimacy give way to confrontation and massive eruptions. The music stirs you up and touches parts of your heart you thought were long dead.
Born in the Salzkammergut region, Sodl grew up in a musical family. She has been making music since she was a child, pouring out melodies on the piano and learning the accordion at the age of seven. “Music has always been the most natural form of expression for me,” she says. At 15, Sodl began singing and playing guitar, soon after writing her first songs. At 16, Sodl presented a song on the Austrian radio station FM4, booked her own concerts, and in the same year released her debut EP “Flowers on the Moon”. Always “writing”, Sodl works on songs that break through stereotypical gender roles, combining naturalism and a grounded earthiness with rage, empowerment, and outrageous melodies. “A secret garden in my womb, I won’t hide it anymore,” she sings in “I am a Woman.” “I will speak my truth until my voice is sore.” Sodl is here to stay.
