The New Austrian Sound of Music – in short NASOM – is a biannual sponsorship program by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA), promoting emerging Austrian and Austria-based musicians performing abroad.
The aim of NASOM is to offer support for international performances of promising young talents with the help of a global network of embassies, cultural forums and consulates over a period of two year. A further objective of NASOM is to draw more attention to the fact that Austrian music – beyond the traditional – is as vibrant, modern and culturally diverse as ever.
Every two years, the young artists accepted for this program are selected in cooperation with the organization mica – music austria and an expert commission. Participants of the sponsorship program are chosen from the genres classical, jazz, global, contemporary and pop/electronic music.

The 25 nominations for the sixth edition of “The New Austrian Sound of Music” (NASOM) for 2018/19 have now been made public. NASOM is a funding program for Austrian artists supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA). Federal Minister Sebastian Kurz is particularly excited by the quality of the nominees: “The young musicians are an excellent representation of the breadth and diversity of Austrian music. It is particularly fortunate that this year many artists from the genres of pop/electronic and jazz have applied.”
A panel of experts worked together with mica – music austria and Austrian music universities to identify the five best acts in the genres of classical music, jazz, pop/electronic, contemporary music and world music. NASOM was initiated by the BMEIA 15 years ago to support newcomers in the Austrian music scene. The 25 acts will receive support from the Austrian embassies and consulates of the BMEIA in their performances abroad. This includes suggestions of promoters and festivals as well as the organisation of concerts. The support provides a significant jump-start to young musicians on the way to international performances.
